We're Accepting
New Patients

Choosing a new veterinarian is one of the most important decisions you make for your pet, and we don’t take that lightly.

At Burloak Animal Hospital, we believe your pet deserves a vet who actually knows them: their history, their quirks, and what calm looks like for them specifically.

Whether you have a dog, a cat, a rabbit, a bird, or an animal that other clinics have sent you elsewhere for, we want you to feel completely at ease before you walk through our door.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT

Your First Appointment

We hear you out before anything else.

Your concerns come first. We’ll ask about your pet’s history, lifestyle, diet, and any changes you’ve noticed. The whole conversation happens with you in the room, not in a back area. You’re part of the care team, not a waiting room seat.

We explain everything clearly, including cost.

Before any diagnostic or treatment, we’ll walk you through what we’re recommending and why, in plain language. We’ll discuss your options and any associated costs so you can make a confident, informed decision.

Low-stress handling

We understand that vet visits can be hard on animals, especially cats and small exotic pets who find new environments stressful. Our team is trained to work gently and patiently, at your pet’s pace. We want your pet to leave calmer than they arrived, not more anxious.

WHAT TO BRING

For your First Visit

A little preparation goes a long way. Here’s what helps us give your pet the best first appointment:

  • Any previous veterinary records, vaccination history, or recent lab results

  • Your questions. We mean that.
Write them down; no list is too long

  • For cats: a carrier that feels familiar, a blanket or toy from home inside helps

  • For exotic or small pets: any notes on their normal behaviour, habitat, and diet

  • If requested - a fresh stool sample in a sealed container

  • Your pet insurance information, if you
have coverage, we're happy to assist with documentation

  • A list of current medications, supplements, or special foods your
pet is on

Payment, Financing

& Pet Insurance

We understand that veterinary care represents a real financial commitment, and we believe in transparency before you commit to anything.

Costs Explained

Before any diagnostic test, procedure, or surgery, we’ll provide an estimate and walk you through your options.

Financing is available

We offer patient financing through Scratchpay to help spread the cost of care when you need it. Ask our team for details when you book.

Pet insurance

If your pet has insurance coverage, we’re glad to assist with the documentation your provider needs. Bring your policy information to your first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Burloak accepting new patients?

Yes. We’re currently welcoming new patients and new families to the practice. We’d love to meet your pet.

  • Do I need a referral to book an appointment at Burloak?

No referral is needed. We welcome new patients directly. Simply call us or submit an appointment request through our website and our team will be in touch to confirm your booking.

  • What should I bring to my pet's first appointment?

Bring any previous vet records, vaccination history, a list of current medications, and your pet insurance information if applicable. For exotics and small pets, notes on their usual diet, environment, and behaviour are really helpful. And bring your questions, no list is too long.

  • Do you see rabbits, birds, and reptiles, or just dogs and cats?

Yes, our team has extensive experience with rabbits, birds (including parrots and budgies), reptiles (including bearded dragons, geckos, turtles, and snakes), ferrets, guinea pigs, and other small mammals. If you’re unsure whether we can help with your specific animal, call us and we’ll be honest with you.

  • How long does a first appointment take?

We set aside enough time to do a thorough examination and have a real conversation, not a rushed in-and-out visit. Plan for approximately 30–60 minutes for an initial wellness exam, though this can vary depending on your pet’s needs.

  • Do you accommodate same-day appointments for urgent concerns?

We do our best to accommodate urgent concerns during clinic hours when possible. Please call as early in the day as you can, the sooner you call, the more we can do to help. We are not a 24-hour emergency hospital, so for after-hours emergencies we will direct you to an appropriate emergency facility.

  • How does payment work? Do you offer financing?

We provide estimates before any procedure or diagnostic so you always know what to expect. We offer financing through Scratchpay for clients who need to spread the cost of care. We also work with pet insurance providers and can assist with documentation your insurer requires.
